Jason Fried — "Guests are forcing functions. They help you do those last few things you know you need to do, but didn't until now." Source
Chris: This is why I pre-schedule as many meetings as I possibly can, because if I schedule meetings with folks, that is a forcing function to make sure that stuff gets done in a timely fashion. Before I wrap up any call -- whether it is a sales-related call or one for an active client with deadlines -- I go ahead and get that call on the books so that we all have that forcing function.
I also try to let people know, when those things are happening, what percentage of completion they can expect ahead of time. I'm definitely all about bringing people collaboratively into the process, but that also means that they need to know that what they're looking at is not something that I have 100% confidence in. There are areas of potential collaboration that I'm leaving open, and that's very intentional. In order to do that, there has to be that knowledge exchanged up front with good communication, because without that, it seems like balls are dropping and things are getting rushed for no reason.
