Fresh Baguette - Sales
Chris LaFay: It. 25 Minute timer. Customers, your first 2,000 like customers and the VIPs. How you doing, Charles? You having a good day today?
Charles Duféÿ: Yes, very good. How are you?
Chris LaFay: Yeah, it is bringing. It's actually been a really productive day. I'm looking at my list of things and I'm like, you know what? I actually accomplished pretty much everything I set out to accomplish today. Right.
Charles Duféÿ: Oh, good for you. Good for you.
Chris LaFay: It's a win. What have you been up to? Anything exciting outside of work?
Charles Duféÿ: Yes, very exciting. We're launching our new business right now. We have our first paid acquisitions coming in, so we're very happy with that.
Chris LaFay: Okay, that's awesome. What kind of business is it?
Charles Duféÿ: It's a, it's a D2C bakery subscription and it's based out of Fresh Baguette. Fresh Baguette is a 12 year old bakery in D.C. make Great Bread and now we're making or shipping it to.
Chris LaFay: People's homes, which is what we're talking about today.
Charles Duféÿ: Yes, it is. Exactly.
Chris LaFay: Wait a minute. Why this. This sounds vaguely familiar. When you say launching a new business, I was like, okay, cool. We. Are you getting out of the like food business and into something else Here? Okay, I got you.
Charles Duféÿ: No, no, no, no. That's what we are. Yeah, yeah. My Fresh Baguette is like the brand new brand of fresh baguette. So it's. You can consider it the startup in a pre established company.
Chris LaFay: Yeah, totally. I, I wholeheartedly get that. That's awesome.
Charles Duféÿ: Where are you based? I was wondering. All right, okay, cool. Very cool.
Chris LaFay: Atlanta in particular. So I'm actually curious where. How did you find us? I'm assuming through a Shopify page, if I had to guess.
Charles Duféÿ: Yes, exactly. Actually, I, I don't that you'll be able to tell me, but we, we were looking for the agency with which Magic Spoon had been working.
Chris LaFay: Yes. Okay. So you, you did you figured out that. That's what I thought. Most people, that's how most people find us when it comes to Shopify stuff. We do, we do some Shopify work and we do a lot of WordPress work. And so normally when folks from Shopify come knocking on the door, it's typically because of Magic Spoon and the case studies and all that kind of fun stuff.
Charles Duféÿ: Yeah, we really love their website and we love their Bundle page, which is why right now we've already invested into this new website, which we're pretty much happy with. I mean, there are a few fixes that we still need to do and we're still working with our agency to make it perform better. But we're optimistic on the long term website that we have right now. It's just we are working with Recharge currently and we found out just recently that you can customize a lot of recharges. You can all, you can fully customize Recharge pretty much as long as you work with your own agency and developers. And we really love what you've done with Magic Spoon, which is why we, out of curiosity, wanted to know what kind of pricing and timing you were working with for, for such a bundle page.
Chris LaFay: Yes. So, so me, I'm going to be able to talk to you about some very high level details. Me as a human Shopify is not my bread and butter. I have my lead developer, his name is Andrew. He is off today. He's actually off. He's off today and tomorrow. So I at least wanted to chat with you. We might not need to use all 30 minutes, but I can kind of give you a very high level of what we did for Magic Spoon. I can probably give you a rough ballpark price as well. And then from there, if we're in the same general ballpark, I can get a call, set up with you and Andrew and Andrew will be able to answer all of these very app specific technical Shopify questions and be able to narrow that scope down. Really?
Charles Duféÿ: Sure. Yeah, exactly. That's. I think we, we agree that we don't. Maybe we won't need the 30 minutes, but I'd be very curious to, to hear you on the introduction.
Chris LaFay: Awesome. Yeah. So from the, from the Shopify side with Magic Spoon, they wanted to do the whole b. I'm going to probably call it byob. Build your own bundle. That's what they've termed it internally. And one of the bigger pieces with it that I'm aware of was we actually worked with Stay AI as well and I believe Stay AI does some of their like recurring subscription payments and whatnot. So we partnered up with Stay on the build your own bundle piece and we also partnered up with another, a conversion rate optimization company called Acadia who honestly, if you go back to the BYOB page once a month, you'll probably actually notice some changes to it. So there's been a lot of things that we've learned throughout the last year on, at least for breakfast foods, how to best optimize kind of the user experience across the bundling page. And so I know that basically all of their products are available within the build your own bundle tool. So that's not a problem at all. I do know that one of the the hoops that we had to jump over was how are we handling customized pricing. And I know that with whatever back end pricing mechanisms that we use, whether it was Recharge or Stay AI, one of the core pieces that we had a lot of conversations around was how does the bundle pricing work? Is it going to be done based on the quantity of products and we do a increasing percentage off based on the number of products that you subscribe to or whether you do a subscription versus a one off purchase? What does that discount look like when you bundle things up? I know that there are going to be a lot of discussions around how does discounting work within the confines of a bundle plus subscriptions. So I know that there were a couple of areas where it was like if we do it this way, that's going to be more technologically challenging. If we go this other direction, that's going to be simpler. So if you have any core thoughts on how you want to accomplish that from a pricing perspective that you're gung ho on that this has to be the way it works for the business. Make sure you come kind of with some of those thoughts as well too.
Charles Duféÿ: Just so you're saying that they're working with Recharge as well.
Chris LaFay: I believe Recharge sounds familiar. I know Stay AI is in the equation. That I know for a fact.
Charles Duféÿ: Stay AI would be another like also a subscription app. Let me check that.
Chris LaFay: Yes.
Charles Duféÿ: I've never heard of Stay AI. We've tried working with alternatives to Recharge, but I haven't heard of Stay AI yet.
Chris LaFay: Stay AI I believe is the subscription.
Charles Duféÿ: Portion of and so top Shopify subscription app. All right. Yeah. I'd be curious to know why they work with Stay AI and not with Recharge. I guess they're not working with both of them because that would be really expensive.
Chris LaFay: I would assume not. Then I've heard of Recharge, but I might have heard it from another Shopify client.
Charles Duféÿ: Oh, Graza as well is working with them. All right, I'll take a look at shop@stay AI if you have any for some reason, any like documentation or any reason like if you have any way to just introduce the AI to us just so we know why they'd be working with them instead of Recharge. That's just out of again curiosity.
Chris LaFay: But yeah, awesome. Making a note of that really quick. So I know that a lot of stuff is powered by Stay AI here on the subscription side of things. I know that on this core template that was created on, for the actual bundling creation process, there was a lot of work done to kind of divide up collections as well too. So having collections kind of be separated. So another thing to think about as you're kind of going through kind of the thought process of, from a business side of things, how do we want this bundling or box creation to work? Do you want to have all collections available? Do you want to only have some of them available? How do you want to decide which ones are going to be a part of the box building process versus not? So it's one core thing to kind of keep in mind. And I know that we, we price this out for a candle company based on their specific kind of sub stack within Shopify. I don't know if they were using Recharge versus Stay AI or what other tools they had, but I do know that we came in somewhere between 12 and $18,000 to build out what. We built out something similar for Magic Spoon on their site, but I don't know the technique.
Charles Duféÿ: What's the name of their website?
Chris LaFay: Differences. We actually ended up not doing it for them. They were a little bit smaller, they were a candle company, but that was the only thing that we quoted out for them. So we ended up that.
Charles Duféÿ: I mean, 12 to 18k maybe if it's, if it's a candle company, maybe it's not as complex as. I mean, I don't know how many products they have, but we have a lot. Yeah.
Chris LaFay: And I don't think quantity of products is actually too terribly much the, the differentiator. I think it's more about collection management and the UX on how all these things are being shown. And so that would be a better question for you to challenge my lead developer, Andrew about. And I do apologize, I'm not going to have all these technical details, but I did at least want to chat with you today for a brief moment.
Charles Duféÿ: No, yeah, it's. It's interesting. So, and when you say you were working also with Acadia, what does Acadia do?
Chris LaFay: They do conversion rate optimization. And so they're one of our other partner agencies that we do a lot of work with and they'll basically run AB tests on various different pages month over month and see what's working, what isn't. And then whichever tests end up winning, they then pass over to us to then do the actual implementation on the Shopify.
Charles Duféÿ: All right, so.
Chris LaFay: And they've been a fantastic partner for Magic Spoon.
Charles Duféÿ: That's more for like a retainer if it's like on a regular basis you would have Acadia check out your conversion metrics and again, using that retainer, you would be able to implement whatever changes they advise you to do.
Chris LaFay: Okay, correct. Exactly. And that's not a requirement to work with us on the long term, but it was something that Magic Spoon did get a lot of, has been getting a lot of benefit out of. So I do like to mention it when we, when we talk about Shopify. They have a, they have a real good niche within consumer products. Shopify conversion rate optimization. And yes, that, that work is on a retainer.
Charles Duféÿ: Okay, very clear. I want to talk to someone about like how. Okay. Do you have any other brands that you've been working with which I could check the websites of or for bundles?
Chris LaFay: For bundles in particular? No, Magic Spoon is the one that we have for bundles because you're, you're.
Charles Duféÿ: What's your core activity here at Motion?
Chris LaFay: Okay, but. Activity. I'm sorry, core activity of what again? Oh, Motion. I'm sorry. Motion is the. My AI note taker. I apologize.
Charles Duféÿ: Oh, okay. I just, I don't know what the name of your. I forgot the name of your company.
Chris LaFay: No, you're good. My company is called Classic City Consulting. Right, okay.
Charles Duféÿ: Yeah. So what's the core activity here?
Chris LaFay: Web design and development is the core of what we do. And then we have a wing that works on Shopify and a wing that works on WordPress. My personal background as the owner of the business is WordPress, but my lead dev and fellow entrepreneur in residence does a lot of Shopify and that's his bread and butter. And so yeah, that's who you would be working with primarily alongside of a project manager that we have as well too.
Charles Duféÿ: All right. Okay. So for us it would really be. Right now we're thinking of it, but we, we'd have to think it through. It would be a one, a one time optimization of our current recharge line of code. Right now we're using a recharge just like pre built bundle page. But if. Yeah, we're thinking of customizing that fully. So from what you've been saying of what you've done with the candle company, I think it could totally actually fit our needs. So if you have any more details on the kind of rates and timelines with which you work.
Chris LaFay: Yeah, so this, that would really be right now with where we're at on the Shopify side of the house. We just wrapped up. We're actually in the process of wrapping up two projects right now. So within the Next week or two, both of our Shopify folks are going to be a little bit more free than they were the last month and a half or so too. So the timing on this is actually really Good. This is September 3rd. What I can do is I can, I can reach out to Andrew Day, he's off today, but doing a couple personal things. I can reach out to him, see what times he's available next week to chat when he is back. And I can get a call scheduled between you and Andrew so that you, you guys can talk specifics about exactly what you're looking to do and what does success look like. And then he'll be at that point to drive into like, specific pricing, specific timeline, the whole nine yards.
Charles Duféÿ: So. All right. Okay. Thank you very much. Yeah, you can organize that call spontaneously when he comes back. And I think we can, we can leave it to here for today. So I'd be curious to talk with him when he comes back.
Chris LaFay: Awesome. That all sounds good. Well, thank you so much for chatting with me today. I appreciate it. I always like being the first point of contact whenever I can. And I'll reach out to Andrew and I will get an email chain started with both of you guys probably at some point tomorrow.
Charles Duféÿ: Thank you very much. Have a great day.
Chris LaFay: You too. Take care. Bye.
Charles Duféÿ: Bye. Take care.
